Professional Registration
The General Teaching Council for Scotland

This is the body responsible for 'reviewing standards of education, training
and fitness to teach, of individuals entering the teaching profession in
Scotland.'

Registration is a requirement for teaching in all local authority
nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in Scotland. Most independent
schools also require teachers to be registered.

The registration process deals with professional recognition and eligibility to teach. Registration is not yet
compulsory in the further education sector.
Assessment / Fee
- A non-refundable assessment fee of £50 is charged. Payment
must accompany a candidate's application form when it is
submitted. The fee should be a sterling cheque or sterling
bankers order.

Candidates are expected to hold appropriate qualifications broadly equivalent to those of Scottish teachers.

A letter is issued to candidates as quickly as possible following receipt of the completed
application, indicating whether or not registration can be offered subject to
the applicant satisfying the Disclosure Scotland police check and overseas
police checks, and appropriate references being received from referees.

The whole registration process from receipt of the completed application form may
typically take around 6 to 8 weeks.
Disclosure

GTC Scotland must be satisfied that applicants are of fit character to be
members of the teaching profession.

The Council receives enhanced disclosures from Disclosure Scotland under Part V of the Police Act 1997.

These disclosure certificates list all convictions, pending convictions and any other relevant
information which Police Chief Constables may see fit to release in the given circumstances.
